Starting Uni, is this a mid-life crisis?

If you want something done, give it to a busy person #Benjaminfranklin.

We’ve all heard that saying and I’ve had it said to me on several occasions, but I can’t seem to be able to say no. I want to be the best person I can be for my family and for my employer.

Both my husband and I work full-time and raise our beautiful boys aged 10 and 8 (much younger in the photo #needanupdatedfamilyphoto), we look after our house and the chores that come with that, plus a 40 acre hobby farm and have just purchased a property with amazing ocean views, but requires the old house to be demolished #anotherjobtothelist.

We live in Dongara – Port Denison in Western Australia, which has the best climate and beautiful beaches so we live an active lifestyle. Sunday mornings is Surf Club, I coach the boys basketball team and their dad coaches them in soccer and helps with cricket. I also volunteer on a fund-raising committee where we raise funds for those in need.

I recently received a  promotion at work that meant I had to get a university degree. Ahhh at the age of 42 I’m going to Uni! I work in Local Government as the Manager Community Capacity. I’m responsible for a large part of the budget so I’m very much looking forward to my first unit in accounting.

I completely underestimated how much time is required to complete the unit, plus the second unit I’ve enrolled in (studying part-time of course). Wish me luck everyone, I’m going to need it.

  1. Hi – I hear you. I also am 42, 3 grown children, work full time, and live on acreage. The things we put ourselves through. Looking forward to studying this year though. I am doing a Bachelor of Property – full time.

  2. Hi Nicole
Great to have you in our unit. Many distance students will under-estimate what it will take to complete their units! A key to our unit is to start early and stay ahead; or at least do not get behind. 🙂
And great you are starting to connect in with others in our unit. That can help a lot; including when you might feel a bit overwhelmed at times, or what to share your ah hah! moments.
    Regards
    Martin

  3. Hi Nicole.
I believe taking that first step is the hardest. I also work full time and am 46 but I think it’s never too late. I am sure we will all get into a rhythm as we do with everything else. Best of luck.

  4. Hi Nicole, I am so glad I stumbled upon your blog this morning, it gives me the inspiration to keep going after seeing how many women over 40, who work full time that are in the same boat as myself. Sitting here being over whelmed about how far behind I am to other people, seeing your blog and the others who have commented, I’m thinking if they can do it so can I. Thanks for the inspiration.
